The Wealth Roadmap: 7 Steps to Stop Just Spending Money and Start Building Wealth

Your bank statement may reveal more about your financial future than your salary does.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X or a Baby Boomer.

The question is: where is your money taking you?

Let me ask you something.

If I looked at your bank statement for the last 30 days…

what would it tell me?

Would I see somebody building wealth?

Or would I see:

DoorDash.

Amazon.

Subscriptions.

Afterpay.

Random little $12 purchases that somehow turned into $412? 😂

Listen, I’m not judging you.

Because money isn’t just about math.

It’s about habits.

And our generation, upbringing, priorities and experiences can all influence how we think about money.

💡 THE WEALTH ROADMAP RULE:

You don’t have to stop enjoying your money. You need to make sure some of today’s money is creating tomorrow’s options.

First: What Does Your Generation Have to Do With Your Money?

I recently broke down the differences between Gen Z and Baby Boomers and how the two generations can approach spending, saving and financial priorities differently.

Watch the video below before we build your personal Wealth Roadmap.

Here’s What Really Matters

You don’t have to spend like your generation.

You don’t have to invest like your parents.

And you don’t have to follow whatever financial trend is popular on TikTok this week.

Your financial decisions should support the life YOU are trying to build.

Build Your Personal Wealth Roadmap

Forget trying to become a millionaire overnight.

Let’s start with seven steps that can move you toward a stronger financial position.

1

Know Where Your Money Is Going

You can’t create a financial plan around numbers you don’t know.

Pull up your bank and credit card statements from the last 30 days.

Don’t guess.

Actually look.

Separate your spending into categories:

  • Housing
  • Transportation
  • Food
  • Debt
  • Subscriptions
  • Shopping
  • Entertainment
  • Savings
  • Investing

Then ask:

“Does the way I’m spending match what I say I want?”

2

Create an Emergency Buffer

Before thinking about getting rich, think about becoming harder to knock down financially.

Car repairs happen.

Jobs change.

Appliances break.

Life starts life-ing. 😂

An emergency fund gives you money specifically reserved for unexpected expenses.

You don’t have to build the entire thing overnight.

Start with a realistic first milestone and build from there.

3

Get High-Cost Debt Under Control

Debt can make building wealth harder because part of tomorrow’s income is already committed to yesterday’s purchases.

Make a list of what you owe.

Include:

  • Balance
  • Interest rate
  • Minimum payment
  • Due date

Then develop a repayment strategy that fits your financial situation.

The important part is getting intentional instead of allowing balances to quietly follow you year after year.

4

Automate Some of Your Progress

One of the easiest ways to sabotage a financial plan is relying entirely on motivation.

Because motivation has bills too. 😂

Consider automating appropriate transfers toward goals such as:

  • Emergency savings
  • Retirement
  • Investments
  • Future purchases
  • Debt payments

Even relatively small automatic contributions can help create consistency.

💰 PAY YOUR FUTURE TOO.

Your landlord gets paid. The phone company gets paid. Netflix gets paid. Amazon DEFINITELY gets paid. 😂 Make sure your future financial goals receive something too.

5

Start Building Assets

This is where the conversation begins shifting from simply saving money toward potentially building wealth.

An asset is something that has economic value.

Depending on your circumstances and risk tolerance, wealth-building assets might eventually include things such as:

  • Retirement investments
  • Diversified investments
  • Real estate
  • A profitable business
  • Intellectual property
  • Other income-producing assets

Different assets carry different risks.

The goal isn’t buying random investments because somebody on social media yelled “THIS IS ABOUT TO EXPLODE!”

The goal is understanding what you own and why you own it.

6

Increase Your Earning Power

There’s a limit to how much you can cut.

Eventually you may also need to ask:

“How can I increase what comes in?”

That could mean:

  • Learning a new skill
  • Negotiating compensation
  • Changing jobs
  • Starting a side business
  • Freelancing
  • Building an online business
  • Creating digital assets

Saving $5 matters.

But developing a skill that increases your earning potential can change the entire equation.

7

Protect What You’re Building

Building wealth is one side of financial planning.

Protecting yourself against major financial setbacks is another.

Depending on your circumstances, that may mean reviewing areas such as:

  • Insurance coverage
  • Beneficiary designations
  • Estate planning
  • Emergency savings
  • Cybersecurity
  • Financial records

The more you build, the more important it becomes to think about what could threaten what you’ve built.

Gen Z vs. Boomers: Who Has the Better Money Strategy?

Here’s where I think this conversation gets interesting.

Instead of asking which generation is financially “better,” there may be lessons worth considering from different approaches.

📱

The Modern Mindset

Younger consumers may place greater emphasis on flexibility, technology, convenience and experiences.

Those priorities aren’t automatically bad.

Technology has also created new ways to work, learn and build businesses.

🏡

The Traditional Mindset

Older generations may place greater emphasis on stability, saving, homeownership and long-term financial security.

Those principles can still have value even as the economic environment changes.

THE BETTER QUESTION:

Instead of asking “Which generation is right?”, ask “Which financial habits help me build the life I’m actually trying to create?”

The Lifestyle Inflation Trap

This one can catch every generation.

You get a raise.

Suddenly the car needs upgrading.

Then the apartment needs upgrading.

The vacation needs upgrading.

The clothes need upgrading.

And somehow you make $20,000 more…

but you’re still wondering where your money went.

That’s lifestyle inflation.

Increasing your lifestyle as your income increases isn’t automatically wrong.

But if every additional dollar of income immediately becomes another dollar of spending, building wealth becomes much harder.

Your Wealth Roadmap Checklist

  • I know how much money comes in each month.
  • I know approximately where my money goes.
  • I have a plan for unexpected expenses.
  • I know what debts I owe and their interest rates.
  • I have identified unnecessary recurring expenses.
  • I have defined at least one short-term financial goal.
  • I have defined at least one long-term financial goal.
  • I am learning about investing rather than blindly following hype.
  • I am looking for ways to increase my earning power.
  • I have considered how to protect myself and my family financially.
🚨 MONEY CHECK:

Go through your last 30 days of transactions.

If you can’t identify at least one spending habit you would change, you probably didn’t look hard enough. 😂

What If You Want to Build Additional Income?

This is the part of the Wealth Roadmap that interests me a lot.

Because budgeting matters.

Saving matters.

Investing matters.

But increasing income can give you more money to work with in the first place.

And the internet has created opportunities previous generations didn’t have.

You can potentially build:

  • A content website
  • An affiliate marketing business
  • A YouTube channel
  • A digital product
  • A freelance service
  • An online brand

None of those guarantee income.

But learning skills that can potentially create additional revenue can become another piece of your financial roadmap.

Don’t chase overnight riches. Build skills and assets.

Your First 30 Days

WEEK 1

Audit Your Money

Review your income, spending, subscriptions and debts.

WEEK 2

Create Your Safety Plan

Choose an initial emergency savings target and begin working toward it.

WEEK 3

Choose Your Wealth Goal

Decide what you’re actually trying to accomplish financially instead of simply saying, “I want more money.”

WEEK 4

Build One New Habit

Automate a contribution, reduce an unnecessary expense, begin learning a new skill or take another measurable step toward your goal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a wealth roadmap?

A wealth roadmap is a personal plan outlining the financial steps you intend to take toward goals such as improving cash flow, building savings, managing debt, investing, increasing income and protecting your finances.

How do I start building wealth with little money?

Start by understanding your cash flow and creating realistic financial goals. Building an emergency buffer, managing costly debt, improving financial knowledge and gradually increasing savings or investments may all be appropriate steps depending on your circumstances.

Is saving the same as building wealth?

Saving is an important part of financial security, but wealth building can also involve acquiring assets, investing and increasing earning power. Investments involve risk and should be evaluated carefully.

Does my generation determine how I handle money?

No. Generational trends can be interesting to study, but your personal financial behavior is influenced by many factors including income, upbringing, goals, location, responsibilities and individual values.

Can an online business help build wealth?

A profitable business can potentially become an income-producing asset, but online businesses involve work and risk. Revenue and profit are never guaranteed.

What’s the most important first step?

Know your numbers. It’s difficult to create a useful financial plan without understanding what you earn, spend, owe and currently own.

Your Money Should Have a Destination

It doesn’t matter whether you’re Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X or a Baby Boomer.

You don’t have to copy another generation’s financial life.

Take the lessons that make sense.

Build the habits that move you forward.

And create a roadmap based on where YOU want to go.

Because earning money is only the beginning.
What you do with it determines where it can take you.

Final Thoughts

Your bank statement tells a story.

It shows what you value.

What you prioritize.

What you’re building.

And sometimes what needs to change.

So don’t worry about whether you spend money like a Gen Zer, Millennial or Baby Boomer.

Ask whether you’re spending money like the person you’re trying to become.

That’s where your Wealth Roadmap begins.
