Why Your Landing Page Isn’t Converting: The Ultimate Landing Page Checklist
You worked hard to get that free traffic from Pinterest, YouTube, Google, TikTok or social media. Don’t disrespect your hustle by sending all those visitors to a landing page that makes them turn around and leave. 😂
You can get hundreds — even thousands — of visitors to your website, but traffic alone doesn’t build an email list.
Your landing page has one very important job:
Convince the right visitor to take ONE specific action.
If you’re trying to build an email list, that action is usually entering an email address and joining your list.
If someone lands on your page and has to figure out what they’re supposed to do next, you’ve already made the process too complicated.
That’s why I created what I call my Sovereign Setup Checklist.
You can use this checklist to audit your AWeber landing pages — or almost any other lead-generation landing page — before sending traffic to them.
First: What Makes a Landing Page Convert?
A good landing page doesn’t necessarily need fancy animations, expensive software or a complicated design.
In many cases, simple wins.
Your visitor should quickly understand:
- What you’re offering
- Why they should care
- What they’ll receive
- What you want them to do next
That’s it.
The more distractions you introduce, the easier it becomes for visitors to leave without completing the action you brought them there to take.
🧱 Phase 1: The Foundations
The “No-Tech-Hassle” Setup
Before worrying about fancy copywriting tricks, make sure the basic structure of your landing page makes sense.
-
The Single-Purpose Rule:
Is your page focused on one primary action? If the purpose of the page is collecting email subscribers, don’t overwhelm visitors with unrelated links, menus, products and social-media buttons. One page. One offer. One primary goal. -
The Mobile-Responsive Check:
Have you actually opened the landing page on your phone? Don’t just trust the desktop preview inside your page builder. Check the real page on a mobile device. Make sure the headline is readable, buttons are easy to tap, images aren’t covering text and visitors don’t have to zoom in to understand the offer. -
The Page-Speed Check:
Does your landing page load quickly? Large images, unnecessary videos, complicated scripts and too many plugins can slow down a page. And somebody who hasn’t even seen your offer yet has absolutely no reason to sit around waiting for it to load. -
The Trustworthy URL Check:
Does the URL look clean and legitimate? If you’re using an AWeber-hosted landing page, customize the page URL when the available settings allow it. A clean URL is easier to remember and looks much more intentional than a long string of random characters.
Don’t assume your page works because it looks good on your laptop. Test the actual link yourself. Open it from your phone, click the button and submit the form just like a real subscriber would.
🧲 Phase 2: The Emotional Hook
This Is Where Your Copywriting Matters
Once the page works technically, it’s time to ask a harder question:
Why should anybody give you their email address?
People aren’t sitting around thinking:
“You know what would make my day? Another newsletter!” 😂
They’re looking for a result.
Your copy needs to connect your free offer to something they actually want.
-
The Strong Headline:
Does your headline immediately address a frustration, problem or desired outcome? Your headline doesn’t need to sound outrageous. It needs to make the right person think: “Okay… this is for me.”
“Sign Up for My Free Newsletter.”
🔥 Stronger:“Stop Wasting Money on Ads: Learn How to Start Generating Free Traffic to Your Affiliate Links.”
-
The Subheadline Value Bomb:
Does your subheadline clearly explain what the visitor gets? Don’t make them guess. Tell them exactly what’s coming. Example: “Download my 5-step checklist for creating a simple free-traffic strategy for your affiliate business.” -
The Frictionless Form:
Are you asking only for information you actually need? If all you need is an email address, don’t automatically ask for a phone number, address, birthday, company name and their mama’s maiden name. 😂 Every additional request creates another decision for the visitor. For a simple lead magnet, first name + email — or even just email — may be enough. -
The High-Energy CTA Button:
Does your button describe what happens next? Generic buttons such as “Submit” don’t reinforce the benefit. Try making the button part of your offer.

What Should Be Above the Fold?
“Above the fold” simply means what visitors can see before they start scrolling.
On a lead-generation landing page, I generally want visitors to quickly see:
- A strong headline
- A clear explanation of the benefit
- The offer or lead magnet
- The opt-in form
- A clear CTA button
Don’t make somebody read your autobiography before they figure out why they’re there.
You can explain more farther down the page.
⚙️ Phase 3: The Behind-the-Scenes Automation
This is the part beginners sometimes forget.
Getting somebody to enter their email address isn’t the end of the process.
It’s the beginning.
Once they subscribe, your automation should immediately take over.
-
The Custom Thank-You Page:
What happens immediately after someone subscribes? Instead of dumping them onto a generic confirmation screen, consider sending them to a custom thank-you page. Tell them exactly what happens next. Example: “You’re in! Check your inbox for the Free Traffic Blueprint. If you don’t see it, check Promotions or Spam and look for an email from Trecia.” -
The Automation Tag:
Did you assign the correct tag to your form? For example:free-traffic-blueprintTags can help you identify what someone signed up for and trigger the appropriate email campaign inside your email marketing system. -
The Day 0 Welcome Email:
Is your welcome email ready BEFORE you start sending traffic? If you promised a checklist, guide, video or blueprint, your subscriber should know how to access it immediately. Don’t make them wonder whether the form worked. -
The Follow-Up Sequence:
What happens after you deliver the freebie? One email isn’t an email marketing strategy. Your welcome sequence can introduce who you are, provide additional value, answer common questions and eventually introduce relevant products or affiliate recommendations.
Why Your Landing Page May Not Be Converting
There’s no universal conversion rate that every landing page must achieve.
Conversion rates can vary dramatically depending on your traffic source, niche, offer, audience, device, page design and how well visitors already know you.
Instead of obsessing over somebody else’s percentage, look for where your visitors are dropping out.
| If you’re seeing… | Possible problem | What I’d test |
|---|---|---|
| Lots of views but very few sign-ups | Your offer or headline may not feel valuable enough. | Make the outcome more specific. Explain exactly what visitors receive and what problem it helps them solve. |
| People arrive and immediately leave | The page may be confusing, slow or inconsistent with whatever they clicked to get there. | Check mobile speed, simplify the design and make sure your traffic source and landing-page message match. |
| People start but don’t complete the form | You’re potentially asking for too much information or creating unnecessary friction. | Remove fields you don’t actually need and make your CTA clearer. |
| People subscribe but don’t open your emails | They may not recognize your sender name or know what to expect next. | Use your thank-you page to tell them exactly what email to look for and who it will come from. |
| Subscribers open but don’t click | Your email may not create enough interest or give readers a clear next step. | Try one primary CTA and make the benefit of clicking obvious. |
My Simple Landing Page Formula
If you’re staring at a blank AWeber page wondering what in the world you’re supposed to put on it, start here:
1. HEADLINE
Call out the problem or desired result.
2. SUBHEADLINE
Explain exactly what they’re getting.
3. VISUAL
Show the checklist, guide, video, template or result.
4. BENEFITS
Give them 3–5 reasons they should care.
5. OPT-IN FORM
Ask only for what you actually need.
6. CTA
Tell them exactly what happens when they click.
7. AUTOMATION
Deliver what you promised immediately and begin your follow-up sequence.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a landing page?
A landing page is a web page created around a specific campaign or action. In email marketing, a landing page is often designed to persuade a visitor to enter their email address in exchange for a lead magnet, offer or other benefit.
Why isn’t my landing page converting?
Low conversions can have many causes, including poor traffic quality, an unclear headline, a weak offer, slow page speed, mobile usability problems, too many form fields or a mismatch between your advertisement/content and the landing page.
How many fields should my landing page form have?
Only ask for information you actually need. For a simple email lead magnet, an email address may be enough. You can also request a first name if you want to personalize future emails.
Should a landing page have a navigation menu?
If the page is designed specifically to generate leads, limiting unnecessary navigation can help keep visitors focused on the primary action. Your exact design will depend on the purpose of the page.
Can I create a landing page with AWeber?
Yes. AWeber provides landing-page and email-marketing tools that can be used to collect subscribers and connect them with email campaigns and automation.
Final Thoughts
Free traffic is only valuable when you have somewhere useful to send it.
You can spend hours making YouTube videos, Pinterest pins, TikToks, blog posts and social-media content — but if your landing page doesn’t clearly communicate the value of your offer, you’re making your marketing work harder than it needs to.
Start simple.
One audience. One problem. One offer. One action.
Then test.
Change the headline. Test the CTA. Improve the offer. Check the mobile experience.
And don’t just chase traffic.
Build a system that turns that traffic into an audience you can reach again.
