Stop Falling for the Online Guru Trap!
Another guru. Another βsecret system.β Another screenshot showing thousands of dollars. And somehow the secret always costs YOU $997 to discover. Let’s talk about what’s really going on.
βΆ Watch the Video π© See the Red Flags
Can we talk about these online gurus for a minute?
Because apparently everybody on the internet made $37,000 last month while working 14 minutes a day from a beach in Bali. π
And somehow…
They’ve decided to reveal their βsecretβ to YOU.
For the low, low price of $997.
But wait!
If you leave the page, the price goes up.
There are only three spots left.
The timer says you’ve got nine minutes.
And somebody named Jennifer supposedly just bought it in Ohio.
π©π©π© HOLD UP. π©π©π©
Before you pull out that credit card, let’s talk.
π₯ Watch: Stop Falling for the Online Guru Trap!
In this video, I’m talking about something I think every person trying to make money online needs to hear.
The Online Guru Formula
Once you’ve been online long enough, you start recognizing the formula.
π° STEP 1: Show you an impressive income screenshot.
ποΈ STEP 2: Show the car, house, vacation or lifestyle.
π© STEP 3: Remind you how miserable your job is.
π€« STEP 4: Tell you they discovered a βsecret.β
β° STEP 5: Create urgency so you don’t have time to research it.
π³ STEP 6: Sell you the solution.
β¬οΈ STEP 7: Immediately try to sell you something ELSE.
The problem isn’t that somebody sells a course.
People should be compensated for useful education.
The problem starts when the marketing makes the MONEY look easier than the WORK.
π© 7 Online Guru Red Flags
π© #1: The Lifestyle Is the Product
Look closely at what they’re actually selling you.
Are they teaching a skill?
Or are they selling you the dream of:
ποΈ The Lamborghini
ποΈ The vacation
π‘ The mansion
π΅ The stacks of money
π» The laptop by the swimming pool
If you understand their lifestyle better than you understand their business model, that’s a red flag.
π© #2: βAnybody Can Make $10,000 a Monthβ
Be extremely skeptical of specific earnings claims.
Ask:
How many customers actually achieved that?
How long did it take?
How much money did they spend?
Did they already have an audience?
Did they run paid advertising?
Are we looking at REVENUE or PROFIT?
Those details change everything.
π© #3: The βSecretβ Business Model
Affiliate marketing isn’t a secret.
E-commerce isn’t a secret.
Digital products aren’t a secret.
YouTube isn’t a secret.
Freelancing isn’t a secret.
Email marketing isn’t a secret.
AI isn’t a secret.
There may be strategies you haven’t learned yet, but be careful when somebody acts like they discovered a mysterious money button nobody else knows exists.
π© #4: Fake Scarcity
βOnly 5 spots remaining!β
You come back tomorrow…
Still five spots.
βThis offer disappears at midnight!β
You check next Tuesday…
Same offer.
Urgency can be legitimate. Fake urgency designed to stop you from thinking is another story.
π© #5: You Keep Having to Buy the NEXT Thing
You bought the $27 course.
But apparently you need the $97 upgrade.
Then the $297 mastermind.
Then the $997 accelerator.
Then the $5,000 coaching program.
And somewhere around $6,418 you’re thinking:
βWhen do I actually start the BUSINESS?β π
π© #6: They Don’t Want You Researching Them
A legitimate business should survive basic research.
Search:
Company name + reviews
Company name + complaints
Guru name + refund
Guru name + lawsuit
Product name + scam
Don’t automatically believe every negative review either.
Look for patterns.
π© #7: They Guarantee Success
Nobody can guarantee your online business will succeed.
There are too many variables:
Your niche.
Your offer.
Your content.
Your competition.
Your traffic.
Your skills.
Your budget.
Your consistency.
A legitimate training program can teach you a process. It cannot guarantee your outcome.
ποΈ Even the FTC Says: Ask for Proof
The Federal Trade Commission advises consumers considering business opportunities to carefully investigate earnings claims.
If somebody tells you people can make a specific amount of money, don’t let screenshots and testimonials be the end of your research.
Ask for evidence.
Read the FTC Guidance βIncome Screenshots Don’t Tell the Whole Story
This is a big one.
Someone shows:
TOTAL SALES
$100,000
π± βI MADE SIX FIGURES!β
Okay.
But how much did they spend?
Maybe:
| Item | Example |
|---|---|
| Revenue | $100,000 |
| Advertising | -$45,000 |
| Products / Fulfillment | -$20,000 |
| Software / Contractors / Other Costs | -$15,000 |
| Example Remaining Before Taxes | $20,000 |
Illustrative example onlyβnot the financial results of any specific business.
Revenue and profit are NOT the same thing.
So How Do You ACTUALLY Make Money Online?
Here’s the boring answer the gurus don’t like.
Learn a Skill + Build Something + Stay Consistent + Improve
That’s basically it.
You can build around:
Affiliate Marketing
Create useful content and earn commissions by recommending relevant products.
Digital Products
Create guides, templates, courses or other useful digital resources.
Content
Build an audience through YouTube, blogging, podcasts or social media.
Services
Sell a skill businesses or individuals already need.
None of those require pretending there’s a secret.
Why I Prefer Building Something I Own
This is one reason I keep talking about websites and affiliate marketing.
Social media is great.
YouTube is great.
TikTok is great.
Facebook is great.
But you’re building on somebody else’s platform.
Your own website gives your business a home base.
π Your Website = Your Online Home Base
You can use YouTube to attract people.
Use social media to attract people.
Use search engines to attract people.
Use email to bring people back.
But your website becomes the place where your content and business live.
What I Recommend Instead of Chasing Gurus
If you’re serious about learning affiliate marketing, I’d rather see you learn the fundamentals than keep buying random βsecret systems.β
That’s why one platform I recommend is Wealthy Affiliate.
And let me make something VERY clear:
I am NOT telling you Wealthy Affiliate is a magic money machine.
I’m recommending it as a place to learn how affiliate websites, content, traffic, research and monetization fit together.
You still have to do the work.
You still have to create content.
You still have to learn.
You still have to get traffic.
And there is no guarantee you’ll make money.
THAT’S the kind of conversation I want people to hear before they spend money online.

Before You Buy ANY Make-Money-Online Course…
Use this checklist.
βοΈ What EXACTLY am I learning?
βοΈ Is this teaching me a transferable skill?
βοΈ Are the income claims supported?
βοΈ What additional expenses will I need?
βοΈ Is there a refund policy?
βοΈ Can I find independent reviews?
βοΈ Does the strategy depend entirely on one platform?
βοΈ Is there a legitimate product or service being created?
βοΈ Is the seller using pressure to stop me from researching?
βοΈ Would I still want this if the luxury cars and income screenshots disappeared?
The Question That Changes Everything
βHow does this business ACTUALLY make money?β
Ask that every single time.
If they can’t explain the business model in plain English…
I’m keeping my credit card in my purse. π

Read My Wealthy Affiliate Review βFrequently Asked Questions
Are all online gurus scams?
No. There are legitimate educators, coaches and business owners selling valuable training online. The important thing is to evaluate the actual product, business model, evidence, costs and marketing claims rather than assuming someone is legitimate simply because they appear successful.
How can I spot a fake online guru?
Warning signs can include unrealistic income promises, unsupported earnings claims, fake scarcity, excessive lifestyle marketing, vague explanations of the actual business model and constant pressure to purchase increasingly expensive upsells.
Can you really make money online?
Yes, legitimate online businesses exist, including affiliate marketing, e-commerce, advertising-supported content, digital products, freelancing and professional services. However, none automatically guarantees income or success.
Is affiliate marketing legitimate?
Yes. Affiliate marketing is a performance-based marketing model where a publisher may receive compensation for qualifying sales or actions generated through tracked referral links. Success still requires a viable audience, traffic and effective marketing.
What is Wealthy Affiliate?
Wealthy Affiliate is an online platform focused on teaching people how to build and grow online businesses, with training and tools related to websites, content, affiliate marketing and traffic.
Does Wealthy Affiliate guarantee I’ll make money?
No. Training and business tools cannot guarantee individual financial results. Your results depend on factors such as your niche, skills, content, traffic, strategy, effort and execution.
Final Thoughts
I want people to make money online.
I want people to start businesses.
I want people to create additional income.
But I DON’T want you spending your last $1,000 because somebody standing beside a rented Lamborghini convinced you that you’re one funnel away from becoming a millionaire.
STOP BUYING THE DREAM.
START LEARNING THE SKILLS.
Learn how marketing works.
Learn how content works.
Learn how traffic works.
Learn how sales work.
Learn how affiliate marketing works.
Learn how to build something you control.
Then put those skills together.
You don’t need another guru to save you.
You need skills you can keep.
