I Turned My Clutter Into $500 Using This Method

Got clothes, shoes, handbags or other items sitting around collecting dust? Here’s how you can use Vinted to turn things you no longer want into extra cash.

How I turned my clutter into $500 selling online

Before you start looking for another side hustle, take a look around your house.

Seriously.

Look inside your closet.

Check those storage bins.

Look at those shoes you haven’t worn in two years.

And don’t forget about those clothes you keep telling yourself you’re going to wear again. 😂

You may already have money sitting around your house—you just have to turn those unwanted items into something somebody else wants to buy.

💰 The Method I Used: Sell What You Already Own

Instead of buying inventory or investing money into another complicated side hustle, one of the easiest places to start is with items you already own.

Vinted is an online secondhand marketplace where people can list pre-owned items and connect with buyers looking for secondhand deals.

That means your closet can become your starting inventory.

Ready to Clean Out That Closet?

Before you throw or give everything away, see whether somebody is willing to buy it.

What Is Vinted?

Vinted is a secondhand marketplace that connects people who want to sell items they no longer need with shoppers looking for pre-owned items.

Instead of throwing something away because you’re finished with it, you can list it and potentially find someone who actually wants it.

Your Clutter Could Be Somebody Else’s Find

Clean It Out → Take Photos → List It → Sell It

Step 1: Shop Your Own House

This is where I would start.

Don’t worry about buying inventory.

Go room by room and look for things you’re genuinely finished using.

Start Looking For:

  • Clothes you don’t wear anymore
  • Shoes sitting in boxes
  • Handbags and accessories
  • Items that no longer fit
  • Things you bought but barely used
  • Unwanted gifts
  • Kids’ items they’ve outgrown
  • Items taking up valuable closet space

Make three piles:

KEEP — things you’re actually using.

DONATE — things that aren’t worth selling.

SELL — items that still have resale value.

Step 2: Start With Your Best Items

Don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to list 100 things on your first day.

Pick 5 to 10 items that are in good condition and that you think somebody would actually want.

Look for recognizable brands, good-condition clothing, shoes, handbags and items that still look attractive.

📱 📸 👗

Good Photos Can Make a Big Difference

Use natural light, a clean background and multiple angles so buyers can clearly see what they’re getting.

Step 3: Take Better Pictures

Remember, your buyer can’t pick up the item and inspect it.

Your pictures have to do that job.

Try photographing items near a window during the daytime.

Show the front, back, labels, details and any flaws.

And please clean the camera lens first! 😂

That tiny step can make your photos look dramatically better.

Step 4: Write an Accurate Description

Don’t just write:

“Black dress.”

Give your buyer useful information.

Brand: Include it if applicable.

Size: Give the actual labeled size.

Condition: New, excellent, good, etc.

Color: Describe it accurately.

Flaws: Be upfront about stains, wear or damage.

Details: Mention anything a buyer would want to know.

Step 5: Price It to Sell

Here’s where people sometimes get stuck.

What you paid for something isn’t necessarily what somebody will pay for it today.

Search for similar secondhand items and see what comparable products are selling for.

Remember: the goal is to turn something you’re NOT using into money you CAN use.

Step 6: Respond to Buyers

Once people start showing interest, pay attention to your messages and notifications.

Some buyers may have questions about measurements, condition or other details before purchasing.

A quick response can sometimes be the difference between making the sale and losing it.

Step 7: Package Your Items Properly

Once something sells, package it carefully.

Make sure the item is clean and protected before shipping.

A buyer who receives exactly what was described is much more likely to have a positive experience.

Can You Really Make $500 Selling Your Clutter?

It’s possible to generate meaningful extra cash selling unwanted items, but there’s no guarantee you’ll make $500—or any particular amount.

Your results depend on what you’re selling, the condition, demand, pricing and how many items you list.

But that’s what I like about this method.

You’re not starting by spending hundreds of dollars on inventory.

You’re starting with things you already own.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Vinted?

Vinted is an online secondhand marketplace where members can list pre-owned items and shop for secondhand products.

What should I sell first?

Start with items you already own that are in good condition and that you no longer use. Clothing, shoes and accessories can be good places to start.

Do I need to buy inventory?

No. Beginners can start by selling unwanted items they already own instead of purchasing products specifically for resale.

How much can I make selling my clutter?

There is no guaranteed amount. Earnings depend on what you have to sell, demand, condition, pricing and the number of successful sales.

Do photos matter when selling online?

Absolutely. Clear photographs help buyers evaluate condition, style and details before purchasing.

Final Thoughts

Sometimes we spend so much time searching for a new way to make money that we overlook what’s already sitting right in front of us.

That shirt you haven’t worn.

Those shoes still sitting in the box.

That handbag hiding in the back of your closet.

You may not want them anymore—but somebody else might.

So before you throw everything out, see if you can turn some of that clutter into cash.
